Major Toy Manufacturer Fined Millions for High Levels of Lead
Toy companies take notice and prepare for new lead regulations coming soon.
According to a report from the Associated Press one of the nation’s largest toy manufacturers has agreed to pay a $2.3 million dollar civil penalty for importing and selling toys with high lead levels. The settlement came as part of an agreement with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) last Friday.
The announcement comes after the CPSC announced earlier this year that “starting February 10, 2009, consumer products intended for children 12 and under cannot have more than 600 parts per million of lead in any accessible part. This new safety requirement is a key component of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) aimed at further reducing children’s exposure to lead.”
Manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers should all be aware of these new regulations. According to the CPSC “sellers will not be immune from prosecution if CPSC’s Office of Compliance finds that someone had actual knowledge that one of these children’s products contained more than 600 ppm lead or continued to make, import, distribute or sell such a product after being put on notice. Agency staff will seek recalls of violative children’s products or other corrective actions, where appropriate.”
EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest environmental testing laboratories, has been busy helping companies prepare for the new lead regulations. “EMSL has a long history of consumer product testing for lead,” reported Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “These new strict regulations are important to ensure the safety of children from dangerous exposure to lead and its many negative health effects,” Frasca continued.
EMSL’s network of nearly 40 laboratories in the United States and Canada have been providing quality analytical services since 1981. To learn more about lead testing visit www.EMSL.com.
