Aker Solutions sets up geo business in Australia

WEBWIRE

Aker Solutions is expanding its subsea and subsurface service offering in Australia by establishing its geo business in the country.

The move is part of Aker Solutions’ strategy to function as a lifecycle partner, throughout the lifetime of subsea oilfields, for oil companies operating in and offshore Australia. This approach is strengthened through the establishment of the geo business, which is a subsurface consultancy that delivers services throughout the entire subsea value chain - from exploration to production.

Aker Solutions’ geo business comprises of geophysicists, geologists, petrophysicists and reservoir engineers. Its main fields of activity are geological and geophysical interpretation, petrophysics, reservoir modelling and simulation, wellsite geology and operations. The set-up in Australia will initially be small, but with ambitious growth plans.

“What we offer is essentially decision support when planning and executing field developments. Our geo unit is the largest subsurface consultancy in Norway. Through decades of operations in the North Sea we are used to operating in demanding conditions, with rough seas and unpredictable weather, which is experience that can be relevant for a challenging Australian continental shelf,” says Erik Sverre Jenssen, president of Aker Solutions’ geo business.

The geo unit will operate out of Aker Solutions’ subsea operations base and regional head office, located near Perth International Airport, Western Australia. The 7000 square metre base, which was opened in May last year, incorporates office building, workshops - including test pit - and client storage facilities.

“By establishing our geo business in Australia, we’re showing our intent of growing our subsea product offering and positioning ourselves for the growing Australian subsea market. We also hope that our extensive geo and reservoir know-how from the mature Norwegian continental shelf will enable us to provide even better support to our customers in Australia,” says Greg Ross, managing director of Aker Solutions’ subsea business in Australia
