PHILADELPHIA.- CIGNA (NYSE:CI) won the Corporate Social Responsibility and Health Award from A Chance to Heal, a Philadelphia organization committed to preventing eating disorders through education and advocacy. The award is based on the CIGNA Foundation’s 2008 Philadelphia event, the Mind/Body Wellness Forum, which brought together mental health experts from CIGNA and leaders from Philadelphia’s academic, medical and human services areas to discuss how to maintain a healthy state of mind and body. The recognition was announced last night during “Celebrate Making a Difference,” at which A Chance to Heal noted the accomplishments of the past four years in reaching thousands of people in Pennsylvania and throughout the country with education about body image, literacy, and the devastating effects of eating disorders.

“It is a privilege for CIGNA to receive this honor as further recognition of our mission to improve health, well-being and security for those we serve, as well as to demonstrate how community partnerships can help us all reach mutual health and wellness goals,” said Carol Ann Petren, CIGNA executive vice president and general counsel, who accepted the award on behalf of CIGNA.

The CIGNA Foundation’s 2008 Mind/Body Wellness Forum featured an overview on mental health practices by Dr. Robert Field of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, along with panel discussions on behavior modification, holistic therapies, self-help, psychological counseling and medication; and workshops on stress, depression, self-esteem and body image, mental illness in children and weight management. A highlight of the event was speaker Liz Murray, whose television movie, Homeless to Harvard, details the inspirational story of how she overcame adversity. At the forum, A Community Partner Expo also took place, highlighting the work that CIGNA’s community partners such as A Chance to Heal are doing to improve the mental health and emotional well-being of families in the Philadelphia area.

CIGNA Foundation is a private foundation funded by contributions from CIGNA Corporation and its subsidiaries. The CIGNA Foundation supports organizations sharing its commitment to enhancing the health of individuals and families, and the well-being of their communities, with a special focus on those communities where CIGNA employees live and work.
