Edinburgh Clinic offers UK First for Senior Cats

WEBWIRE

Scotland is definitely the place to be for cats of a ‘certain age’. Edinburgh-based feline supervet and author Dr Sarah Caney is starting the UK’s first specialist geriatric cat clinic which senior cats can attend for a complete health ‘MOT’.

The clinics, which will be held at the Hospital for Small Animals at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies on Saturday mornings, aim to identify treatable problems which are common in older cats (10+ years) such as kidney disease, thyroid problems, arthritis, high blood pressure and dental disease. Once diagnosed many of these problems can be very effectively treated, not only giving owners longer with their much-loved pet, but also a much better quality of life. Cats who attend the clinics will receive a thorough health check and tests. Owners will then be provided with a full report which will detail all results plus treatment recommendations (if appropriate). Dr Caney, who is founder and CEO of Scottish Company ‘Cat Professional’, is keen that cat owners maintain the relationship with their existing vet, therefore appointments are by referral and a copy of each report will also be sent to the referring vet to ensure continuity of treatment.

Although the oldest cat on record was ‘Creme Puff’ who lived in Austin, Texas for an incredible 38 years and 3 days* Dr Caney says “to date the oldest cat that I’ve treated was 26. With advances in animal healthcare there’s every chance that the clinics may identify a cat of a similar age if not older”. Dr Caney is one of only a handful of specialists in feline medicine working in the UK and is recognised internationally as an expert with several books published on topics including feline kidney failure, eye problems and feline lower urinary tract disease.

Interested cat owners who wish to attend the clinics can download a copy of the referral form at www.catprofessional.com which must then be completed by their vet. Further information or questions can be directed to info@catprofessional.com.
