Majority of Executives Sending Fewer Resumes Over the Course of Their Transition Period, Survey Reveals

WEBWIRE

LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 28, 2009 – IMPACT Hiring Solutions today announced the results of a survey of more than 120 executives in transition about the average number of resumes they are submitting. Sixty-two percent of the respondents said they are sending out fewer resumes than they were one month ago. The remaining respondents, thirty-eight percent, indicated they were sending out more resumes than they did last month.

The survey also revealed:

- Sixty-two percent of respondents send an average of 1 to 10 resumes per month
- Twenty-three percent send an average of 11 to 20 resumes per month
- Fifteen percent reported sending an average of more than 20 resumes per month

“We suspect the decrease is due to at least two factors. First, there are fewer job openings. The longer the candidate is on the market, the smaller the prospective job market becomes. During the first month of transition, candidates typically send resumes to every potential job opening just to catch up. That only leaves new positions to target, and the number normally decreases over time,” said Brad Remillard, noted speaker, author and co-founder of IMPACT Hiring Solutions.

“Second, candidates give up applying as they become more and more frustrated. Their search is not yielding the results expected and the candidate simply reduces the number of jobs they apply for. However this also reflects a meaningful learning curve -- over time candidates realize that applying for every potential long-shot job is a waste of time. A better strategy is to target the companies and open position that best matches the candidate’s background and experience,” Remillard added.
