LA Testing continues high quality formaldehyde analysis

2009 California regulations result in the implementation of consistent, clear, and concise monitoring plans for formaldehyde.

While formaldehyde has been a commonly used chemical compound found in a number of items, it has also become one of the most highly scrutinized compounds readily available in the open market. In fact, formaldehyde has been long used in various industries like building material manufacturing, glue manufacturing and embalming fluid production, to name a few.

Formaldehyde is also a by-product of combustion and other processes and therefore can be found in significant concentrations in numerous environments. One important factor to consider is that while formaldehyde may have been used in a production process, it may not be present in the final product. It is also important to note that formaldehyde has been classified as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen”.

A regular monitoring program should be considered in industries that utilize formaldehyde within their products as it is critical that exposures to the compound be minimized. The current “permissible exposure limits” (PELs) for formaldehyde in the workplace are 0.75 parts per million (ppm) as an 8 hour time-weighted average (TWA) – meaning that exposures for an 8 hour work day should not exceed 0.75 ppm PEL.

In determining the formaldehyde concentrations, the laboratory chosen should be carefully considered prior to submission of any samples as not all commercial laboratories are equivalent. For instance, one must consider accreditations and certifications and whether or not they are current.

LA Testing boasts a number of accreditations and certifications, all of which are available for review. Along with holding widely recognized accreditations such as NVLAP, AIHA, LELAP, and NELAP, LA Testing also holds various state certifications.
