CEAP Initiative Makes Chemical Drawing Package Available to Schools

Toronto, Canada (May 19, 2009)—As part of their 15th anniversary celebrations, Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc., (ACD/Labs) has launched a new program in which they will provide site-wide licences of their chemical structure drawing package, ACD/ChemSketch Freeware, to academic institutions.

While many institutions have benefited from academic site licenses of ACD/Labs’ commercial products, tight budgets often mean that schools are unable to offer even simple software to students. The new ACD/Labs ChemSketch Educational Access Program (CEAP) brings the benefits of a unified structure drawing package to schools without the pain of individual students and/or educators independently downloading freeware onto their machines. More than 350 academic institutions worldwide currently benefit from site licensing of ChemSketch Freeware, and the new program will make access to this package even easier.

In March 2009, ACD/Labs announced the one millionth download of ChemSketch Freeware from their website, along with the release of their latest version (version 12) which lets users quickly and easily draw all kinds of chemical structures; optimizes spatial configuration; allows 2D or 3D structure viewing; permits generation of IUPAC and CAS Index nomenclature for molecules with fewer than 50 atoms and 3 ring structures; and provides predictions of the octanol-water partition coefficient, logP.

As a further incentive to get schools involved with the kind of software students will be using once they join the workforce, ACD/Labs has set the Virtual Laboratory Challenge for educators: share innovative ways in which you have used software in teaching (with an overview of the materials used) for a chance to win up to $5000 in ACD/Labs software for your laboratory or school.
