QinetiQ supports selection of new RNLI hull design

WEBWIRE

The RNLI has unveiled the new hull design of its Fast Carriage Boat 2 (FCB2) with help from QinetiQ’s maritime consultancy practice, based at Haslar, UK. The RNLI is one of QinetiQ’s priority charities and the team at Haslar found a practical way to support the charity by allowing them to use the Ocean Basin, one of QinetiQ’s hydrodynamic test facilities. The Ocean Basin (122m x 61m x 5.5m) and a Ship (Towing) Tank (270m x 12m x 5.5m) both have a wavemaking capability and are used to test physical ship and submarine models to predict their performance.
Six models were tested in open water and at QinetiQ’s facilities, before a design by the RNLI’s own Naval Architects was chosen.
