-Combines 24-hour systems support center with latest release of HOPE/EGMAIN-GX -

Tokyo — Fujitsu Limited today announced the release of HOPE/EGMAIN-GX V2 (Version 2), a new version of the electronic medical record (EMR) solution originally released in July 2008, as part of the company’s efforts to shift EMR solutions from an input and reference tool toward a more useful and integral role in healthcare delivery.

The upgraded version includes many leading-edge features enabling doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to make full use of the data accumulated in the EMR system while providing care to patients. Recognizing that EMR systems are a key part of the social infrastructure, Fujitsu has also established a Medical One-Stop Support Service comprised of trained specialists to provide 24/7 support for hospital IT operations and EMR systems. By combining top-notch support with EMR system that can be easily introduced without customization, Fujitsu will safely and securely deploy and operate EMR systems.

Positioning HOPE/EGMAIN-GX as a core solution for the medical community, Fujitsu is enhancing its sales activities in Japan toward large and medium-sized hospitals.

A decade has passed since Fujitsu launched the EMR systems in Japan, and continuing technological advances have led to higher expectations for them. To enable EMR systems to make a greater contribution in the provision of medical care, healthcare providers now require EMRs to offer more sophisticated functions allowing doctors to be faster and more efficient in diagnosing and treating patients, as well as those functions making effective use of the data accumulated in EMRs in the provision of healthcare. Furthermore, as the use of EMRs has become more widespread, they have come to be recognized as a key part of the social infrastructure. Accordingly, there is a need for even higher levels of reliability and operational stability in EMR solutions.

To meet these needs, Fujitsu in Japan released an upgraded version of the HOPE/EGMAIN-GX, the EMR solution originally released in July 2008, which has already been deployed in over 80 healthcare institutions. The concept behind this new version is to have EMRs play a more useful and integral role in the delivery of high-quality medical care rather than being used as a simple input and reference tool.

The new version includes four new functions (patent pending) designed to improve the quality and efficiency of medical practices. The “knowledge set” function, for example, automatically generates databases based on past medical history and allows doctors to write prescriptions according to previous medical patterns. Another new function is the “multi-chart viewer,” which combines multiple panels of patient information on one screen in any desired combination to enable medical personnel to easily grasp a patient’s current condition.

To complement the operations of these EMR systems as a key part of the social infrastructure, Fujitsu has established a Medical One-Stop Support Center. To minimize the time required to resolve problems, the center monitors a dedicated line 24/7 allowing engineers specialized in medical administration and EMRs to remotely examine and handle each problem. The center also conducts preventative monitoring to catch problems before they occur. When deemed necessary, system and customer engineers can be dispatched to the premise to resolve system problems promptly through liaising with the appropriate support departments for products and software.
Product Features

1. Upgrading EMR systems from simple input and reference tools to powerful resources in the provision of medical care (patent pending for following functions)

“Knowledge set” function

When entering prescriptions, the system automatically displays appropriate lists based on past orders registered in the system. The doctor can make a selection from these lists and create an order far more efficiently. These lists can be used as a reference to provide proper medical care.

“eXChart” function

Data entered into templates(1) are automatically collected and arranged to provide viewing efficiency when writing medical charts. eXChart also allows users to conduct keyword searches for medical information within the stored medical charts. A comprehensive timeline of medical charts can be presented visually in order to examine changes in a patient’s medical condition at a glance as well. With the addition of these functions, HOPE/EGMAIN-GX has progressed significantly from previous EMR solutions in terms of making full use of stored patient information in real time at the point of care.

“Historical view” function

The historical view function displays in graph form a patient’s past medical treatment information in terms of amount, frequency of visits, and level of importance. This assists healthcare professionals in looking at medical records based on comprehensive data found in the EMR system.

“Multi-chart viewer” function

The multi-chart viewer function allows panels of information to be arranged so that healthcare professionals can more readily digest the wide variety of medical data stored in the EMR system. The multi-chart viewer allows each department or each user to customize the EMR display according to their needs. Organizing the display in a way that best fits a given medical approach is critical in supporting healthcare professionals because it enables them to quickly grasp a patient’s status and make decisions on treatment priorities.

2. Advances in the new platform

The previous version of the system adopted a traditional client-server model and all applications ran on both client PCs and servers. With the new version, all applications run solely on client machines and application servers are no longer required. This architectural change allows for a simpler system structure, more efficient server processes, a reduction in system trouble, and localization of system failure caused by server application, which altogether result in improvements in both reliability and operability.

Glossary and Notes

1 Template:
An efficient tool for entering medical charts in the HOPE/EGMAIN-GX. A template consists of predesigned components based on a wide range of data including the patient’s condition, status, and other additional information.
