Burbank, CA –– Novelas Educativas™ is launching www.novelaseducativas.com to distribute digital films that inform and motivate underserved communities to take action in their own lives. Novelas Educativas™ partners with community colleges, universities, national foundations, schools and non-profits to produce media resources as part of classroom instruction, and workshops. The latest film, “16 Summers,” is based on an African-American family overcoming financial struggles to attend college and features actor Nick Cannon.

Novelas Educativas™ uses research-based, Entertainment-Education (E-E) strategies that incorporate educational messages into popular entertainment mediums such as narrative films. For over 30 years, E-E has been one of the most effective strategies and the goal for Novelas Educativas™ is to continue this effort by producing entertaining and accessible films that bridge the information divide.

Approximately 38 million African Americans and 43 million Latinos live in the U.S. and many are disconnected from mainstream resources. Many studies show that African Americans and Latinos are less likely to graduate from high school, go to college, have health insurance, open a checking account, own a home, or even vote.

“We are using Novelas Educativas with Latino families across New York City and State. I wish I had thousands of copies of the Novelas – we are constantly looking for good materials that are accessible to families at different educational levels and that are realistic, well-produced, and educational. Students see themselves in these films – they laugh, they cry – but most importantly, they learn” says, Marguerite Lukes, New York University.

With telenovelas being a force in TV programming, Novelas Educativas™ uses dramas and narrative film to connect with families and youth from various economic and social backgrounds. Viewers are hooked on storylines with universal themes and with characters that overcome cultural and language barriers.

Novelas Educativas™ produces media resources that address the significant high school achievement gap for African Americans and Latinos as identified in President Obama’s Economic Recovery Plan, disparities in nutrition and childhood obesity, healthcare access, and financial literacy.
