A team of three naval architects from QinetiQ GRC Ltd, a wholly owned QinetiQ subsidiary, have been selected as one of five finalists in the World Superyacht Award - Young Designer of the Year 2009 - with a truly innovative trimaran design – EURYDICE.

Participating in QinetiQ GRC’s graduate development scheme, Chris Burden, Julien Cuzon and Sophie Chudziak applied innovative thinking to develop the stunning design for EURYDICE [eur i dich-ee] – a mythological sea nymph. The creative solution was also produced using the QinetiQ GRC developed Paramarine software product to optimise and extend the concept into a fully analysed and balanced design.

“The high standard of entries presented the judges with no easy task in selecting the finalists”, stated Trevor Blakeley, Chief Executive of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and chairman of the judging panel. “The judges were impressed by the effort and quality of work presented, reflecting the undoubted talent of today’s young naval architects and marine designers, which surely bodes well for the future of the industry.”

EURYDICE combines efficiency, comfort and elegance. The philosophy of the design is driven by these three themes and balances art with science. The idea of a trimaran/monohull hybrid is inspired by the pursuit of a low environmental impact yacht with large usable deck areas while maintaining comfort and aesthetics to the highest possible level.

“Our complex hull and design offers many advantages from structural strength, seakeeping, powering, endurance, and stability, through to increased upper deck space,” explained Chris Burden, the EURYDICE team project manager. “We are thrilled to have got this far in the competition and prove our design prowess.”

QinetiQ GRC’s Paramarine sofware package was used throughout the design process to exploit the advanced hull form generation technology and the full breadth of its integrated analysis capabilities. Paramarine is the world’s only fully integrated design and analysis naval architecture product that can deal with the complexities of both military and civil ship and submarine design. Its integrated nature also allows concept designs to be rapidly developed, analysed and optimised to meet the complex requirements of modern designs, reducing both cost and risk.

This prestigious annual World Superyacht Award - Young Designer of the Year is organised by The Royal Institution of Naval Architects in association with Boat International, and sponsored by Camper & Nicholsons International. The overall winner will be announced at the awards ceremony in London in May.
