Dead Unicorn wins Ford Fiesta Movement Contest; Free Car and Gas for Six Months plus Nationwide Exposure

WEBWIRE

Zac Shaw and Paul Heath -- members of Kingston, NY indie rock band Dead Unicorn -- have been chosen as agents of the Ford Fiesta Movement. They triumphed over 3,200 other applicants to win a Ford Fiesta car, complete with free gas and insurance for six months.

In March, Ford Motor Company issued an Internet-wide challenge to submit a three-to-five minute YouTube video explaining why the entrant deserves one of one hundred Ford Fiestas to be awarded.

The band entered the contest hoping to use the car to tour in support of their upcoming album, Global Thermonuclear War. The duo runs a local record label and merchandising business (Music for End Times) and being chosen as Ford Fiesta agents has given them a big break towards national exposure.

“Usually we’re not speechless -- as a band we’re pretty loud and crazy -- but our jaws are in perma-drop right now,” gushed Shaw, who got the confirmation call while at work on Tuesday, March 31.

“The car is awesome, and we finally can get back to touring the country and hanging out with our friends across the nation,” said Heath. “But on top of that,” he asked, “who knows what kind of attention we’ll get for our band and label, let alone the whole Kingston music scene?”

The band is dedicated to making the most of their Fiesta agent experience. Besides contacting local media, the band has been active on online social networks such as MySpace, Facebook, iLike and Twitter promoting their triumph.

“We’re not internet celebrities like some of the other winners,” said Heath, "but we are the only band in the contest, so we definitely feel like rock stars right now.”

“I think we won for two reasons,” Shaw remarked. "One, our friends and fan base were amazingly supportive, giving our video almost 1,000 views in just a couple of weeks. Two, our production values were among the best of the contest. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the video, and everyone who watched… give us a call if you need a ride!”

The video was produced by Chris Rahm of The Ellenbogen Group, and shot locally in a green-screen studio at the Seven21 Media Center in Kingston, NY (http://www.seven21.com).

The winning video can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.tinyurl.com/dzdan5. The band will pick up their car on April 20, 2009 after a two-day training session in New York City with Ford staff.
