Next-Gen 40G/100G Solution Extends Life of Fiber Investments as Global Bandwidth Demand Proves Recession-proof

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Customer traction continues to grow for Nortel’s* [TSX: NT, OTC: NRTLQ] 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine as service providers around the world upgrade the capacity of their network to meet increasing bandwidth requirements. With 44 wins to date for its 40G solution, Nortel was ranked #1 in 40G shipments in 4Q08 by Dell’Oro Group with a 32% share and recently shipped its 1000th 40G wavelength.

Nortel’s 40G Adaptive Optical Engine quadruples network capacity without complex re-engineering so operators can leverage existing network assets. This solution uses advanced digital signal processing techniques to compensate for signal degradations often caused by fiber impairments, enabling long reach distances with minimal equipment.

Nortel is leveraging this same technology for its 100G solution, which positions operators to make a ’future proof’ investment by migrating as needed from 10G to 40G to 100G with minimal network redesign. Nortel is leading the industry in development of 100G solutions with several field trials now successfully under its belt, including previously announced trials with Comcast and Verizon in North America and a new 10G/40G/100G trial just completed with Neos Networks in the UK .

“The true value of Nortel’s optical solution to service providers is the simple migration path it provides from 10G to 40G to 100G, allowing customers to cost-effectively increase the capacity of their network by leveraging their existing equipment and fiber,” said Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. “Increasingly, cost-conscious carriers are demanding solutions that will continue to add value as bandwidth demand grows.”

Philippe Morin will highlight Nortel’s participation at this week’s OFC/NFOEC conference and expo ** in San Diego with a plenary session Tuesday morning focusing on the factors that are driving continued demand for bandwidth even during a global recession. You can hear Philippe’s thoughts on the economic and social factors driving this demand by listening to this on-demand podcast .

Nortel’s booth at OFC will highlight several advanced demonstrations. Nortel’s 100G solution will be shown carrying a full 100G traffic payload (10 x 10GbE) over a 1000km span of fibre in a 50GHz-spaced channel. In addition, Nortel will demonstrate how coherent technology can be used to simplify operations by removing certain components from the network.
