HOPKINTON, Mass .- EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, announced today it is a sponsor of the World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Product and Supply Chain Initiative, a joint effort with the World Business Council on Sustainable Development. This initiative will provide businesses with a methodology for measuring emissions throughout product value chains; identifying the greatest emission-reduction opportunities; and making sustainable business decisions about the products they produce.EMC will also participate in one of the technical working groups developing the new GHG Protocol product life cycle standard.

“Companies are looking for ways to reduce the impact on climate change from business and product decisions, but don’t always have the tools they need to make informed decisions,” said David Rich of the World Resources Institute. “With the support and contributions of participants from around the world, such as EMC, we are creating a common, standardized approach for companies to inventory, analyze, and manage GHG emissions throughout their corporate and product value chains.”

As a leading global technology company, EMC recognizes that customers are striving to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency in the datacenter and throughout their business. To further this, the company has a cross-functional team of engineers that collaborates in design of hardware and software products that are themselves increasingly more efficient, and that enable our customers to build and manage an efficient information infrastructure.EMC’s Design for Environment program was created to ensure consideration and reduction of environmental impact is incorporated in every step of the product lifecycle from concept through end of life.

“We continually work with our suppliers, partners and customers to improve energy efficiency of our products, our customers’ storage infrastructures and our operations,” said Kathrin Winkler, EMC’s Senior Director, Corporate Sustainability.“We’re looking forward to helping develop a practical and actionable GHG Protocol standard that can drive emissions reductions for our industry and our customers.By collaborating with other companies, we will be able to set a common standard, nomenclature and framework to avoid duplication of effort and free up resources at each company to further innovation toward a low-carbon economy.”

EMC is on the Board of Directors of The Green Grid, a global consortium dedicated to developing and promoting energy efficiency for data centers and information service delivery.Additionally, EMC participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project and joined the Climate Leaders program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2004.For more information about EMC’s sustainability initiatives, please visit: http://www.emc.com/about/global-citizenship/index.htm.
