Secure Services Gateways Deliver Integrated Security and Routing with Modular WAN Interfaces

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 6, 2006 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today introduced the Secure Services Gateway (SSG) 500 Series, a new line of high-performance firewall/virtual private networking (VPN) platforms with integrated local-area network (LAN) and wide-area network (WAN) interfaces. The new Secure Services Gateway 520 and 550 platforms enable enterprises to cost-effectively address the growing security and connectivity requirements of branch and medium-sized offices by combining best-in-class security and routing in a high-performance platform.

Higher-speed broadband connections are being used at branch offices to accommodate more processing-intensive applications, while direct Internet connections are being leveraged as a cost-effective and productive means to connect users with customers, partners and other constituencies. This increase in connectivity coupled with the rising prevalence of internal and external threats such as worms, viruses and spyware is driving the need for dedicated, high-performance security processing at the branch. Juniper Networks’ new high-performance Secure Services Gateway platforms enable distributed enterprises to rollout secure and assured LAN and WAN-based services to the branch with the capability to scale as connectivity and security requirements grow. The new platforms support the Juniper Networks Enterprise Infranet framework by offering increased delivery, use and threat control throughout the network.

“Extending security services such as intrusion prevention and Web filtering/blocking to our field offices has been limited due to the capital and administrative expense required to maintain separate security and routing devices across each location,” said Michael Shisko, director of information technology for Hitachi Consulting. “Juniper’s Secure Services Gateway is the first product we’ve tested that delivers the security, performance and connectivity capabilities we need to enable our various business-critical applications throughout our field locations, including complex applications such as VoIP (voice-over Internet-protocol).”

Security as the Foundation

The Juniper Networks Secure Services Gateway is built from the ground-up with security as the foundation, based on Juniper’s trusted ScreenOS operating system. The platform delivers up to one gigabit-per-second (Gbps) firewall and 500 megabits-per-second (Mbps) VPN throughput, and is designed to provide optional intrusion prevention, Web filtering, antivirus and antispam capabilities to protect customers from internal LAN and external WAN-based security threats. The Secure Services Gateways provide industry-leading performance with concurrent firewall/VPN and content security processing to meet the requirements of broadband connected branch offices. Security zones also enable customers to divide their wired and wireless networks into secure segments, each with their own security policy, allowing for better support of various user groups that could include employees, contractors and customers.

“Security remains the most fundamental issue for the distributed enterprise, and as more Internet-based applications are extended to branch offices, enterprise IT organizations must think security first when building out the branch office infrastructure,” said Joel Conover, principal analyst at Current Analysis. “Juniper Networks’ Secure Services Gateway is an extensible branch office platform that combines the best in security and routing to give distributed organizations an efficient, affordable option for extending security controls to branch offices.”

Optimal Branch Routing

The Juniper Networks Secure Services Gateways deliver advanced software routing and multiple hardware options for connecting users. Optional WAN interface cards taken from Juniper’s best-in-class routers can be plugged into the SSG platform, while WAN encapsulation protocols taken from JUNOS, Juniper’s router operating system, are integrated into the ScreenOS security and routing engine - proven in many branch and remote office environments. The Secure Services Gateway includes four 10/100/1000 Ethernet interfaces built into the chassis and six I/O expansion slots that provide modular T1/E1, DS3, serial, and copper or fiber gigabit Ethernet connection options. The product gives customers the flexibility to support existing WAN connections and migrate to next-generation broadband WAN connections.

“Consolidating security and routing infrastructure is compelling to our organization both from an administrative and cost of operation perspective,” said Perry Jarvis, network operations manger for the City of Burbank, California. “We found the Juniper Networks Secure Services Gateway to install quickly and easily, creating an infrastructure with no security gaps. The Secure Services Gateway gives us the best of both worlds with its secure ScreenOS architecture and the option to add WAN connections by simply dropping in different interface cards.”

“Broadband connected branch offices require high-performance and advanced security processing,” said Hitesh Sheth, vice president of security products for Juniper Networks. “Juniper Networks is continuing to answer the needs of our customers with the new Secure Services Gateway product line, which provides best-in-class security and connectivity options for branch, regional and medium-size offices.”

Pricing and Availability

The Juniper Networks Secure Services Gateway 520 and 550 platforms are available today through Juniper’s global network of reseller partners. List pricing starts at $6,000 for the SSG 520 and $10,000 for the SSG 550.
