Village councils will have mutual access to video, voice and data

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., and JAIPUR, India – 6 Feb., 2006 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) announced today that the Indian state of Rajasthan has begun taking delivery of its MOTOwi4™ Canopy™ wireless broadband equipment for construction of a statewide wireless network. The Motorola network project represents the first statewide deployment of wireless broadband infrastructure in India.

Rajasthan, one of India’s 26 states, has a population estimated at more than 60 million people. The 132,140-square-mile, predominantly rural state, which borders Pakistan on the northwest, is comprised of some 10,000 villages and their Panchayats – self-governing councils that have co-existed without the benefit of any advanced technological means of communication with one another.

The Motorola MOTOwi4 Canopy network will become the wireless backbone or grid system designed to eventually connect the state’s 10,000 Panchayats, thus giving its village councils and the general citizenry the ability to communicate and administrate seamlessly and efficiently throughout Rajasthan. If faced with an emergency, the Canopy network also can provide the means necessary to enhance the state’s disaster management capabilities both in terms of emergency preparedness as well as after the fact in actual disaster situations.

“The MOTOwi4 Canopy network we are providing for the state of Rajasthan is significant for a number of reasons,” said Firdose Vandrevala, Motorola corporate vice president and head of Motorola India. “To begin with, it is the first deployment of its kind involving a statewide wireless broadband network anywhere in India. What is more, however, is that the deployment provides for eventual high-speed connectivity to so many rural locations where Internet penetration levels are very low and even non-existent. By advancing the reach of the Internet to all areas within the state, Rajasthan’s citizens for the first time will be able to share information with others throughout the state and throughout the world,” Vandrevala added.
