5th Annual Live 24-Hour Worldwide Forum Set For March 11-12, 2009

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Motorola Foundation is a proud sponsor of the Global Marathon, an event for, by and about women in engineering that begins Wednesday, March 11 at noon ET. Led by the National Engineers Week Foundation, the online forum is now celebrating its 5th year of uniting women around the world to inspire current and future generations of engineers.

This year’s Global Marathon, themed “Connecting women to engineer a better future; because dreams need doing,” will feature 24 hours of virtual programming from around the world, focusing on the benefits and wide-ranging career possibilities for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Beginning in North America, the Global Marathon will “follow the sun” as presenters from a variety of technology backgrounds share inspiration and insight for girls across five regions.

Leslie Jones, Motorola Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer will serve as this year’s Global Marathon honorary chairperson, and Eileen Sweeney, Director of the Motorola Foundation, will be the Master of Ceremonies.

“I’m enormously pleased to be part of this inspirational event and join women from around the world to share information and insight on topics about careers in engineering and technology,” said Jones. “The engagement and success of women in these exciting career paths ensures that we spur future innovation with the most talented thinkers from diverse perspectives and viewpoints.”

“Young women are natural problem-solvers, but often lack the confidence and role models that keep them involved in science and math fields throughout the course of their education and into their careers,” said Sweeney. “The Motorola Foundation focuses on programs like the Global Marathon that ignite a passion for technology by providing a unique learning environment for young women to make these fields accessible and relevant.”

The Global Marathon will begin at 12 p.m. ET on March 11 and continue for 24 hours before ending at 12 p.m. ET on March 12. The complete schedule of speakers and information about how to access their presentations will be posted at www.eweek.org.
