Epson Develops Host Controller LSI Designed Exclusively for SD Memory Cards

WEBWIRE

Seiko Epson Corporation (“Epson”, TSE: 6724) has developed the S1R72E11 host controller LSI designed exclusively for SD memory cards and ideally suited for embedded devices. Shipment of samples has already commenced with a sample price of 650 yen per unit.

Use of the SD memory card, which has become the de facto standard for memory cards, has become common worldwide for a wide range of applications. The SD memory card makes it easier for users to transport stored data because is not only compact, but also offers increasingly high capacities and speeds. The SD memory card is an extremely convenient type of media that can be used with various types of devices, including personal computers. Demand for SD memory cards in embedded devices has also grown dramatically in recent times.

The newly developed S1R72E11 has been equipped exclusively with a SD memory card control function in order to achieve both a slimmer structure and a lower price. This product can be connected to a universal bus on an existing CPU, eliminating the need for major system upgrades and allowing for speedy, simple SD memory card control. By using the sample firmware provided free of charge, it is also possible to reduce development costs and work hours for product development involving the installation of SD memory cards for the first time.

With a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C and a capability for high-speed transfer, this product supports a wide variety of applications for consumer and industry devices. The S1R72E11 is also compatible with SDHC cards, currently the most popular type of SD memory card with capacities in excess of 2GB, and supports SD Speed Classes 2, 4, and 6, eliminating concerns about the type of media that can be used with it.
