First 0-Watt PC does not consume any energy at all in off-mode or hibernating, yet still remains administrable

Fujitsu Siemens Computers introduces the world’s first 0-Watt PC at CeBIT 2009 in Hannover. With this latest green product innovation, Fujitsu Siemens Computers once again takes the lead in Green IT. The 0-Watt PC does not consume any power in off-mode or hibernating while still remaining administrable. This eliminates wasted energy and money in the office while also protecting the environment. The 0-Watt function will be available in the ESPRIMO E7935 0-Watt and ESPRIMO P7935 0-Watt beginning in summer 2009. At CeBIT, the 0-Watt PC will be on display at Green IT World in Hall 8, Stand B02.

Effective power management is important to save our planet and unnecessary costs, as well as keeping up productivity. According to the latest Gartner research, companies with 2,500 PCs can save more than 40,000 dollars a year by using PC Power Management Activation – and another 6,500 Dollars by turning off or unplugging machines while they are not needed. According to Gartner, many companies don’t shut down machines because they fear they will lose productivity as updates will need to be carried out during working hours.

With its 0-Watt PC Fujitsu Siemens Computers has solved this dilemma. Even though it does not use any power in off-mode or hibernating, the PC remains administrable during a pre-configured time slot and can receive software updates outside of usual working hours. Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ Augsburg based developers came up with the innovation that makes this possible. The device is capable of going into a 0-Watt standby automatically, without someone using the hard-off switch or the off switch at the power outlet. Should the PC have to be administered outside of usual working hours – for example to update software – the administrator has the option to define a time slot in which the PC automatically wakes up and is waiting for updates. Once the time slot is over, it goes back into 0 Watt standby. The user can turn on the PC again with the usual “on” switch at the front of the PC.

With all its Business PCs, Fujitsu Siemens Computers – thanks to its “Low power soft off” feature– already exceeds the latest EU law that requires stand-by mode energy use must be below 0.5 Watt by January 5, 2013. However, this requirement does not lead to the absolute zero energy consumption in off or hibernating mode that the 0-Watt PC achieves.

Stand-by consumption, however, is not the only green argument for the 0-Watt PC. Other environmentally conscious features include a highly efficient power supply with up to 89 percent efficiency which makes it compliant with the requirements of ENERGY STAR® 5.0 (starting July 1, 2009). Halogen-free mainboards, a switched monitor outlet and the use of the new power-saving Intel® chipset and processors as well as environmentally conscious material during the whole production process make the 0-Watt PC a real “green” investment.

The 0-Watt PC is an additional step towards Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ complete range of environmentally conscious products that are fully compliant with the company’s green vision. It seamlessly ties in with Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ success with the 0-Watt Monitor which was introduced at last year’s CeBIT and, by the way, uses a different technology from that of the 0-Watt PC. Fujitsu Siemens Computers owns the patents for both technologies.

The 0-Watt PC will be available beginning summer 2009 in the versions ESPRIMO E7935 0-Watt and ESPRIMO P7935 0-Watt.
