70% of Solicitors and Legal Executives have been affected by redundancy

WEBWIRE

A recent survey by Ten-Percent.co.uk Limited, legal recruiters covering both permanent and locum vacancies, reveals that 70% of solicitors and legal executives have either been made redundant, notified of a potential threat of redundancy, or know other people within their firm who have been made redundant or placed under the threat of redundancy.

51% of solicitors and legal executives who registered with Ten-Percent.co.uk Limited between September 2008 and February 2009 have had no interviews in the last 3 months and 50% have lowered their salary expectations in the last 3 months.

A worrying statistic is that over 45% of solicitors still in work feel under the threat of redundancy in their current post.

Jonathan Fagan, Managing Director of Ten-Percent.co.uk Limited, commented that “these statistics should be no surprise to anyone, but they do not give the full picture of the current state of the legal job market”. “There are legal jobs still out there, and we are still making placements. The statistics show that a lot of firms have had to reduce their property and non-contentious departments in the downturn and a good proportion of these lawyers are coming from those fields of law.”

Ten-Percent.co.uk Limited surveyed 669 solicitors and legal executives who had registered as candidates looking for work with Ten-Percent Legal Recruitment between September 2008 and February 2009.

The full results follow. (survey was by LimeSurvey.org) and the 106 responses were anonymous.
