WEBWIRE

London, For the first time, Lonely Planet is launching a photography exhibition, showcasing the winners from Lonely Planet and Pikeo’s competition to find the most inspiring images to grace the front covers of four new Encounter guides.

From Tuesday 10th March to Saturday 14th March 2009, the free Urban Encounter exhibition will be displaying the winning images, runner up images and judges’ choice images at Host Gallery in Shoreditch, London.

Special guest and professional photographer Pete Seaward will be giving a short talk at the opening night on ‘capturing the urban environment’.
“Travellers have been sharing their holiday snaps with Lonely Planet since we began but we’ve never really been able to show our appreciation until now. We were delighted to receive so many fantastic photographs, and showing them off in a gallery really does them justice. With nearly 10,000 images uploaded to Pikeo, it was a tough task choosing the best for the cover of our Encounter guides,” said Tom Hall, Lonely Planet’s Travel Editor.

In August and September last year, Lonely Planet teamed up with Pikeo - the photo sharing website created by Orange (www.pikeo.com), to run a competition giving readers the chance to submit travel photos for the latest London, Paris, Barcelona and Istanbul Encounter guides, published in March 2009.

The competition launched also in conjunction with London-based photography experiential company, Shoot Experience who ran a “Shoot Encounter” event; an action packed photography treasure hunt around London, taking in some of the most exciting and iconic sites the city has to offer. A panel of prestigious judges consisting of experts in travel photography including representatives from the Association of Photographers, Lonely Planet Images and Pikeo team chose the winning images.
The search for traveller generated photos spanned the globe with the competition open to those in the UK,
France, Spain, USA and Canada. Intrepid Travel provided free trips to India, Russia, Morocco or Kenya for the winners of the four cover images. The twenty seven runners-up also received a selection of prizes.

and the winners are...

Antoine Tardy - Ribera, Barcelona
based in Geneva, Switzerland
“Having been to Barcelona several times before with friends, I seized this opportunity to browse around the city on my own and to stray away from the usual tourist routes. That’s how I ended up exploring ‘La Ribera’ quarter and its labyrinth of quiet squares, narrow alleys and medieval arches.”

Steven Greaves - Paris
based in New York City, USA
“The beauty of this city lies not only in its architectural legacies but in the smiles and often sarcasm of its people.”

George Meyer-Wiel - Istanbul
based in London, United Kingdom
“I’ve managed to capture an ordinary moment of the faithful entering the court of the mosque, probably on a break from work or school.”

Erica Rodriguez - London
based in Madrid, Spain
“I love London. I think the secret of her charm is the combination of the traditional with the current. It is a city with an atmosphere that surrounds you.”
