Skills Enhancement for Pakistan Engineers is Led by UGS’ Software Grant

Wednesday, February 1, 2006, KARACHI, Pakistan and PLANO, Texas – UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced it has provided an in-kind grant of 100 licences of UGS’ leading NX™ digital product development software to the Tools, Dies and Moulds (TDM) Center in Karachi, Pakistan. The UGS grant consists of NX computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software the TDM Center plans to use to teach, train and develop employees for the rapidly growing engineering industry in Pakistan.

The TDM Center plans to deploy NX software as part of a complete tutorial system for product development, design and manufacturing.

TDM Center Chairman Munir Bana stated that the TDM Center would disseminate “hands on” training to the employees in the engineering industry, in addition to full-fledged technical courses for fresh engineering graduates. “To begin with,” he said, “TDM Center Karachi will soon be commencing CAD, CAM and computer aided engineering (CAE) classes using NX software. We believe this will go a long way in helping our local engineering industry to catch up with the worldwide industry leaders.”

“UGS is pleased to be chosen to help upgrade the skills of engineers in Pakistan’s mould and die industry,” said Chin Ying Loong, UGS vice president for ASEAN Operations. “Following the success of similar programs, we strongly believe the skills transfer using our software enables growing economies to train their engineers to meet the demands of the industry.”

Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) has already provided a piece of land over an area of two acres in Korangi Industrial Area, Karachi, for this project. The expected beneficiaries of TDM Center are the telecom, automobile, medical device, home appliance, aviation and mould and die manufacturing sectors.

In a recent meeting held in Islamabad, Pakistan, Federal Minister for Industries, Production and Special Initiatives Jahangir Khan Tareen said, “The proposed TDM Center would not only substitute huge import of dies and moulds but also lead to an increase in engineering sector exports.” He stated that similar TDM Centers would also be set up in other industrial towns of Pakistan. The meeting was attended by chairman, Technology Upgradation & Skills Development Company (TUSDEC), Almas Hyder, in the presence of senior government officials.

“The development of the engineering sector will have a salutary effect on the engineering sector as well as the national economy,” said Almas Hyder, chairman, TUSDEC, while speaking of the benefits of the TDM Center. He stated that Pakistan now has no choice but to jump the curve to come in line with the hi-tech digital technology prevailing globally in the engineering industry.

Simcon International (Pvt.) Ltd, the UGS’ NX Channel Partner in Pakistan, will serve as the first line of support for UGS at TDM Center. “It is a great honour for Simcon to be part of this service to the nation,” said Simcon’s managing director, Farrukh Jamal. “The inception of UGS software in TDM Center will introduce state-of-the-art technical know-how to the Pakistan engineering industry.”
