New B-Series Cat® Knuckleboom Loader Offers Fuel Economy and Power Choices

Cat Forest Products recently launched the new B Series knuckleboom log loader with the introduction of the Cat® 559B. The loader features an enhanced engine and hydraulic power system that improves fuel economy and gives the operator more control to match the loader’s power output to job requirements.

Reduced engine and fan speeds, a reengineered hydraulic pump and bigger hydraulic lines allow more efficient use of horsepower to save fuel while maintaining performance. The new pump also decreases heat generation, resulting in cooler hydraulic system temperatures. Loader performance is further improved by a 15% increase in swing torque and modified main control valve spools that improve cycling to lower the boom faster. The increase in hydraulic line size also allows faster grapple action.

Activated by a flip of the switch, three operating modes give operators the flexibility to match engine speed and pump flow to the application, from thinning small pine to clear cutting big hardwoods. For normal loading operations, the Run Mode provides fast cycle times and the most fuel economy. The Power Boost Mode provides 40% more productivity muscle for heavy duty delimbing, slashing and loading applications requiring fast swing with maximum swing torque.
New in the B Series is the Intermediate Mode, an option between Run and Power Boost, providing the operator with even more control of the loader’s power output and fuel usage.

Information on machine functions is readily available in the Cat 559B. At the touch of a button the operator can call up a diagnostic screen on the console with data on fuel and hydraulic oil level, engine and hydraulic oil temperatures and other machine vital signs.

Also new in the 559B, is an SAE J1939 connection in the cab to provide better diagnostics and historical data of the loader systems during regular servicing and to troubleshoot problems. Maintenance is easier with the new electric-powered hydraulic oil fill pump.

Other changes were made to improve operator comfort. The loader features a new beefed-up heating and air conditioning system. The noise level in the cab has been reduced from 82 decibels to 75 decibels by lowering the engine fan speed and eliminating rattle with structural changes to the cab module.
