Texas Golfer Stanford Wins SBS Open in Hawaii; will be in Houston at Carol Mann LPGA Invitational

Texas golfer Angela Stanford won the season-opener of the LPGA Tour by three shots Saturday at the SBS Open in Kahuku, Hawaii.
The win at Turtle Bay gave the young Texan her fourth career win and third in seven starts, spoiling Michelle Wie’s bid for a victory. Stanford was winner of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational and Bell Micro LPGA Classic in 2008.

Stanford’s win was especially exciting for Carol Mann, the 2008 PGA First Lady of Golf, who has recruited Stanford again this year for the second annual Carol Mann LPGA Players Invitational. The Monday, April 13th event at BlackHorse Golf Club, Houston, will benefit The Women’s Home of Houston seen at www.thewomenshome.org.

“We’ll have our LPGA Legends featuring Kathy Whitworth who owns 88 tournament titles, more than any other pro golfer in history, male or female,” said Mann. “Back again this year will be crowd pleaser Donna Caponi with four major championships. New among the Legends this year is Sandra Haynie, a native Texan who holds four major tournament wins.”

In addition to Angela Stanford, Mann said the “next generation of LPGA legends who will be guest celebrities at the April 13 charity tourney will be three more Texans: Katie Futcher and Stacy Lewis (who both live in The Woodlands), and Brittany Lang of McKinney.”

The team event for men and women will be played on 18 holes of the North Course at BlackHorse in Cypress, a northwest-Houston community. Tee- off of the tournament is at 1 p.m. and also will showcase Sharing the Gift of Golf Clinic led by Carol Mann. The clinic for beginning golfers or those who need a tune up, with many local pros as teachers, will cover the basics of golf from driving to putting to rules. The April 13th event will conclude with an Awards Dinner at the club’s Pavilion with celebrity hosts and auctions.

Co-chairs of this second annual golf tournament are Kay and Rene Joyce and Ginny and Dennis Cahill, golfers and volunteers for The Women’s Home, a United Way agency, www.thewomenshome.org

Over the past 50 years, The Women’s Home has helped thousands of women in our community escape destructive cycles of crisis and has given them a chance to rebuild their lives. To further its mission, The Women’s Home is constructing an 88-unit, affordable housing complex in Spring Branch solely for single, employed women in need of a safe, secure place to live independently.

A former national president of the LPGA, Carol Mann is a Houston-based golf professional associated with The Woodlands Country Club. Golf Digest named her one of the top teachers in Texas and in 2007, Golf for Women magazine voted Carol to its prestigious “Top 50 Teachers” list. Along with Gary Player and Ben Crenshaw, Ms. Mann is a special ambassador and consultant for the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, FL.
