Innovative retail chain takes a ’start small and grow’ approach to data warehousing

MIAMISBURG, Ohio — Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, announced today that Sheetz, Inc., one of America’s fastest growing family-owned and operated convenience store chains, has selected and deployed the Teradata Data Mart Appliance. The Teradata system at Sheetz supports data-mining technology and business intelligence software from multiple vendors for a detailed, integrated view of the business.

The new platform will increase data management capacity at the convenience store chain - known for its award-winning food, innovative technology and excellent customer service. Sheetz continues to grow its network of stores and the need for more complex analytics is increasing. Sheetz uses analytics software from Teradata and other sources to analyze market basket content, product affinity and merchandising.

“The power and scalability of the Teradata platform is ideal for complex analysis with demanding requirements at real-time speed and is proving to be a valuable business investment,” said Jim Wenner, information technology director, Sheetz.

The new Teradata Purpose-Built Platform Family, recently introduced into the data warehouse market, is enjoying steady adoption across industries including retail, hospitality, manufacturing and the entertainment businesses. Teradata’s range of data appliances allow companies of all sizes and complexity to start small and grow with the proven power and performance of the recognized database leader - at an affordable price.

“Sheetz is one of the more innovative retailers and one that recognizes the power and value of a Teradata-driven environment at a time when there is enormous economic pressure in the retail world,” said Ed Dupee, vice president, global industry solutions, Teradata. “In a general market downturn, the advantage of an increased capacity for collective intelligence is a tangible benefit. Sheetz started with a non-Teradata system and the addition of a new Teradata appliance gives the company more and faster visibility, scalability and business insight.”

The Teradata Data Mart Appliance, one of several new options in the Teradata Purpose-Built Platform Family, offers a completely integrated data mart solution with optimized system performance. Based on a single symmetric multi-processing node and Teradata database, it provides dependability and high performance while allowing businesses to begin loading data and running queries within a short time after delivery. In addition, companies can license the award-winning Teradata database to run on their in-house Intel SMP platforms for under $40,000.
