ISLANDIA, N.Y. and TORONTO, ON.- CA, Inc. (NASDAQ: CA), the world’s leading independent IT management software company, and Healthscreen Solutions Inc. (TSX-V: MDU), the leading Canadian provider of physician practice enhancement services and electronic medical record software, have announced an agreement to form a joint initiative to develop technology and services aimed at helping doctors offer chronic disease management programs to their patients.

Based on developing CA software technology, the services will be designed to help individuals with a range of chronic diseases to record and monitor their health data on a real-time basis, allowing for more precise tracking and trending of the impact of behavior such as diet and activity that affect their condition. Healthscreen will leverage its distribution network of over eight thousand Canadian physicians and seven million Canadian patients to implement these services. Under the terms of the agreement, CA will work exclusively with Healthscreen in Canada.

In the first phase of the initiative, the companies have agreed to focus on developing a service aimed at managing health information for individuals with diabetes. According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, more than two million Canadians live with diabetes. If left untreated or improperly managed, diabetes can result in a variety of complications, including, heart, kidney, and eye disease, or nerve damage. Health Canada reports an annual spend of over $9 billion on diabetes. In the United States, there are more than 17.5 million diabetics, according to the American Diabetes Association, with associated health care costs of $175 billion.

“IT plays a critical role in supporting the efforts of governments and organizations around the world as they work to adopt more efficient means of delivering better health care while controlling costs,” said Chris Stakutis, vice president of emerging technologies at CA. “We look forward to working with Healthscreen to develop and offer these unique services to healthcare organizations and patients. By combining CA technologies and Healthscreen industry expertise we hope to help physicians and patients better manage and care for chronic diseases such as diabetes.”

“We have always believed in the opportunity that exists for Healthscreen to leverage its expansive national network of Canadian doctors, to introduce new, innovative services that are aimed at improving patient care,” said Justin Belobaba, president and CEO of Healthscreen. “This is a watershed moment in Healthscreen’s history, as we partner with a global IT company, who has the resources and the capability to develop and help Healthscreen to deploy ground-breaking chronic disease management services to doctors and patients"
