American Airlines to Fly 14 Teenage Amputees for a Week-Long Colorado Ski Trip

FORT WORTH, Texas – American Airlines and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children have teamed up again to send 14 teenage amputee patients on an all-expense-paid ski trip to Winter Park, Colo., for the 28 th Annual Amputee Ski Trip. The group departs from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) today and returns Jan. 31.

Dallas-based Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC), one of the nation’s leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopedic conditions, recognizes that snow skiing is well-suited for amputees. With special equipment, amputees often excel at the sport and, in some cases, become competitive skiers. The teens will ski at Winter Park’s renowned National Sports Center for the Disabled, one of the largest outdoor therapeutic recreation agencies in the world.

For the fourth consecutive year, American Airlines, a founding member of the oneworld® Alliance, is providing air travel for the patients, medical staff and chaperones for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

American also is hosting a send-off party for the patients and their families at the Admirals Club in Terminal D at DFW before the departure. The send-off party will include refreshments and remarks by American and TSRHC representatives, as well as a special water-cannon “shower of affection” to salute the aircraft prior to take-off.

“This ski trip provides these teens an opportunity to experience things that many other children are able to enjoy, the excitement of skiing as well as the camaraderie and fun of forming new friendships,” said Nancy Knipp, President – Admirals Club, at American Airlines. “Our employees are delighted to continue our support of this rewarding program, and to help encourage these children in this wonderful activity.”

“The annual amputee ski trip is a way for our patients to experience a life-changing, rewarding opportunity to develop a new sense of independence, triumph over challenges and bond with others facing similar situations in life-only to return from the trip changed in a positive way,” said Stephanie Brigger, Vice President of Development at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. “This amazing opportunity, provided at no charge to the patients and their families, would not be possible without the support and generosity of TSRHC friends including American Airlines and their partners; and it is through the same generous support from individuals, corporations and foundations that TSRHC is able to provide the highest quality medical care at no charge to patient families.”
