NJ Surgeons Perform Laparoscopic Gallbladder Removal

Ajay Goyal, MD, FACS, and Dr. Glenn Forrester, MD, general and bariatric surgeons from the New Jersey Bariatric Center in Union, NJ, successfully removed a woman’s gallbladder through a single incision in the patient’s belly button. The entire procedure was done with only one incision and left the patient with a hidden scar. It is the first using this technique for a gallbladder removal procedure in Northern New Jersey.

The team has now followed with a series of advanced general laparoscopic surgeries using two incisions to perform an appendectomy, and three incisions to perform colon resection and nissen fundoplication for acid reflux disease. They are also the first in New Jersey to perform Lap Band™ surgery with only two incisions rather than the usual four or five incisions.

The surgery was performed on a 28-year-old female patient at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ. The patient experienced minimal discomfort and has a barely visible scar compared to traditional laparoscopic gallbladder removal requiring three to four incisions - one in the belly button, the others routinely made throughout the abdomen and lower chest, leaving obvious scarring.

Using the RealHand High Dexterity instrumentation, Dr. Goyal was able to combine all of the standard laparoscopic entry points into one incision or abdominal entery – the belly button. The incision was then closed with surgical glue, leaving no other scars from instruments or sutures in the abdomen.

"By reducing the operative site to one single incision through the belly button we’re able to provide our patients with both a reduced pain and recover time as well as an improved cosmetic result,” said Dr. Goyal, Associate Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Overlook Hospital, Summit, New Jersey.
