Centennial Time Capsule touches down at Royal Alberta Museum

January 26, 2006, Edmonton... It may look and sound like a space-age rocket, but Alberta’s Centennial Time Capsule will not be blasting off to the outer reaches of the galaxy anytime soon. The capsule, loaded with Albertans’ memories and mementos, will spend the next 100 years at the Royal Alberta Museum.

“It is not easy to find the right home for a 21 foot, 6,000 pound traveling time capsule,” said Gary Mar, Alberta’s Minister of Community Development. “We considered a number of possibilities. The Royal Alberta Museum is an ideal place to preserve such a big piece of our history. With their upcoming expansion, we know they will make a great space for it.”

Alberta’s Centennial Time Capsule set out on a province-wide tour during the summer of 2005. The capsule visited the 10 communities that hosted the AlbertaSpirit celebrations on September 1. More than 200 communities were invited to fill and insert ’micro time capsules’ with historical mementos, photographs, newspaper clippings, items reflecting local culture and other items telling the story of their regions.

In the fall, the time capsule also made stops at 13 schools around the province, giving students, who may not have had the opportunity to experience the time capsule in their community, the chance to share in a unique legacy for future Albertans.

Albertans will have one final opportunity to see the Alberta Centennial Time Capsule at a public event at the Royal Alberta Museum on Family Day, Monday February 20th from 11 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The time capsule will be then be sealed and stored until it can be incorporated as a permanent display in the renewed museum building.

The time capsule will be reopened during Alberta’s bicentennial in 2105.
