Frost & Sullivan Award Underlines Evonik Goldschmidt GmbH’s Green Credentials

WEBWIRE

The 2008 Frost & Sullivan European Construction Green Product of the Year Award is presented to Evonik Goldschmidt GmbH for its innovative green solutions - considered the first of its kind in Europe - to the construction industry. This Award recognises the best practices followed by the company in developing its patented TEGO® Antifoam 2-57.

Tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) has been the most widely used defoamer or antifoam in many concrete and mortar applications. However, it presents compatibility problems in some concrete plasticiser formulations and is labelled as environmentally hazardous. With its unique formulation, TEGO® Antifoam 2-57 is an ideal alternative to TBP and has gained considerable popularity in the construction chemicals market.

“TEGO® Antifoam 2-57 uses an entirely different chemistry from current alternatives; the product is an emulsion of organo–modified siloxanes,” explains Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sowmya Ramaswami. “It is an aqueous emulsion and therefore leads to stable plasticiser formulations. In comparision with TBP, TEGO® Antifoam 2-57 can be used at much lower dosage rates and complies with many important statutory regulations including FDA regulations, European directives and German Food and Consumer Goods Law).”

The excellent cost efficiency, coupled with excellent compatability and benefitial environmental profile , has resulted in TEGO® Antifoam 2-57 emerging as a better and more effective green solution for the construction industry. For instance, one of the ideal end-applications for TEGO® Anitfoam 2-57 is in concrete water pipes or reservoirs.

“Moreover, in addition to its excellent foam control properties, TEGO® Antifoam 2-57 offers additional benefits to the formulators including easy handling even at low temperatures and excellent compatability with PVC and rubber parts of the dosage equipment,” states Ramaswami. “It is the only defoamer being marketed for use in concrete plasticisers, based on an aqueous emulsion of organomodified siloxanes.”

The product has been widely accepted in Europe as it has proved to be a perfect alternative to TBP in concrete applications. Regulatory threats and other occupational hazards arising from the use of TBP have been key to escalating the acceptance level of TEGO® Antifoam 2-57 in Europe. The product has gained wide acceptance in Asian and American markets as well..

“Apart from being a pioneer in providing green solutions to lignin sulphonate-based applications, Evonik is constantly reinventing itself to extend such green solutions to other concrete applications,” comments Ramaswami. “The company has recently undertaken a major project to manufacture defoamers for polycarboxylate ethers-based (PCE) concrete applications. This signifies Evonik’s commitment to supply a full range of green and better performing additives for the construction chemical industry.”

The Frost & Sullivan Award for Product of the Year is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated excellence in new product development and launch within its industry. The recipient company has shown innovation by launching a broad line of emerging products and technologies.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognise companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
