Dow Wins HARP Award as Safe Shipper

WEBWIRE

Midland, MI - January 25, 2006, For the fourth straight year, The Dow Chemical Company has received the Hazardous Accidental Release Prevention (HARP) Award from The Kansas City Southern Railway Company (KCSR). The award, established in 2001 by KCSR, promotes and recognizes excellence in safety, environmental protection and regulatory compliance.

“At KCSR, our safety vision is to be recognized as the safest railroad in North America,” said Chester Culley, general director environmental quality, KCSR. “We established the HARP award in support of this vision and our commitment as a Responsible Care® partner company.”

Two award categories exist to recognize customers who demonstrate excellence in Non-Accidental Releases (NARs) and those who have shown marked improvement toward NARs. In 2004, Dow shipped approximately 200 tank cars with KCSR and had zero NARs, qualifying for the more stringent NAR Excellence Award category.

“I have to commend the excellent efforts of our rail car loaders - both contracted employees and those working directly for Dow,” said Bill Huff, Global Rail Operations leader, Dow. “They are well trained and understand the potential for leaks, and they work very hard to safely prepare the loads for shipment following our established procedures and strict safety operating disciplines.”

“We are very pleased to again receive this important award from KCS,” said Phil Stewart, Global Rail Safety and Security, Dow. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to the Hazardous Materials transportation program.”
