Crystal Windows and Conservatories Warn of Changes to New UK Planning Rules

Award winning coloured PVC-u conservatory and window specialists Crystal Windows are now advising prospective clients about the October changes to the 2008 UK planning permission rules in order to avoid falling foul of planning regulations. Essentially the 70 cubic meter rule is being scrapped and what constitutes permitted development is changing.

Any single story extension or conservatory built onto the back or any part of a terraced or semi detached property will need local planning permission if it projects more than 3meters from the rear wall of the property. Any single storey extension or conservatory built on any part of the back of a detached property will need planning permission if it projects more than 4 metres from the original rear wall of the property and any single storey extension or conservatory built on any part of the side of the property will need local planning permission if it projects more than half the width of the original property.

Properties built on small sites will need planning permission if more than half of the area of the land around the original property would be covered by extensions or other buildings such as garages. Also any extension or conservatory that reduces the distance from the house to the highway will need planning permission if that distance can only be measured within their property.

Tony Wooderson, Managing Director of Cheshire based Crystal Windows and Conservatories comments “Many companies designing and building conservatories are still unaware of the October changes to UK planning regulations and unfortunately this may lead to conservatories and extensions having to be removed from existing properties. It’s important that the company you choose to design and build your conservatory has a full and thorough understanding of both local and national planning regulations and adheres to the planning rules.”
