New IBM Podcast Explores Need and Opportunity for Smarter IT

WEBWIRE

ARMONK, NY - Today’s information technology is in need of an intelligence makeover, according to experts in a new podcast featured today on the Building a Smarter Planet blog from IBM (NYSE: IBM).

With hundreds of billions of objects being infused with technology -- from roads and shipping containers to phones and appliances -- the amount of data captured in the world is set to increase ten-fold in just three years, according to analyst firm, IDC. Yet the world’s technology systems are not configured in a way to deal with the exponentially increasing amount of data in a way that is more affordable, more energy efficient, and more flexible.

These issues are the focus of the podcast discussion, which features James Governor, co founder of analyst firm, Redmonk, Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst with IDC, Bernie Meyerson, the chief technology officer of IBM’s Systems and Technology Group, and Donna Dillenberger with IBM Research. The podcast can be downloaded directly here: http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/podcasts/future/ITInfrastructure.mp3.

The systems that make the world work, including healthcare, food, traffic, energy, water and financial systems, are all in need of dramatic change. The Building a Smarter Planet blog (http://www.asmarterplanet.com) is aimed at discussing some of these problems and potential solutions for addressing them.
