Unified Fabric takes data centers to the next generation
Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Cisco Systems team up to smooth the path to full virtualization of all data center services and resources
Munich, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has again expanded its cooperation with long-time partner Cisco Systems, by offering the new Cisco Nexus series switches in combination with PRIMERGY servers. Nexus 5000 switching technology supports high-speed 10 Gb Ethernet as well as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), enabling the set up of a Unified Fabric.
Switching to a Unified Fabric provides customers with two key benefits. Firstly, it delivers high performance to support the increasing demands made on virtualized servers, and secondly, it paves the way for a common network for servers and storage, allowing for more flexible data center architectures. Furthermore, by implementing a Unified Fabric, data center operators can expect significant savings in administration, power consumption and space, equipment and cabling. Existing investment in Fibre Channel infrastructures is protected, since these can be incorporated into a Unified Fabric.
“There are huge gains to be made in virtualizing end-to-end data center infrastructures by implementing a Unified Fabric,” commented Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage Business at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “Thanks to our close partnership with Cisco and the tight integration of our product lines, we are making it easier for our customers to build these architectures. Adding the new Nexus series to our offering strengthens Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ position as a major infrastructure vendor that is able to deliver products and services capable of meeting all the challenges presented by complex data centers.”
A working demonstration of a Unified Fabric that combines PRIMERGY servers with Cisco Nexus will be presented this week by Fujitsu Siemens Computers at VISIT, its European IT forum, which takes place in Augsburg, Germany, on November 12 and 13, 2008.
