Radon Awareness Increases Exponentially after the Today Show Reports on Radon Issues from Granite Countertops

A recent broadcast by the Today Show has caused a renewed interest in the dangers of radon in homes and specifically radon coming from granite countertops in people’s kitchens and bathrooms. The broadcast has resulted in a substantial increase in radon testing throughout the United States as reported by one of the nation’s largest radon laboratories, EMSL Analytical, Inc.

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the natural decay of uranium. It is a colorless, odorless and chemically inert gas that cannot be detected by human senses. According the Surgeon General of the United States, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in our country. The EPA’s 2003 Assessment of Risks from Radon reports it is estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths are the result of radon each year in the United States.

EMSL Analytical provides simple to use radon test kits for both homeowners and industry professionals and an instructional video can be viewed at www.emsl.tv showing the basic steps necessary to perform a home test for radon.

“Concerned homeowners with granite countertops can perform simple do it yourself tests to determine if radon levels are high,” stated Garrett Ray, Radiological Laboratory Manager at EMSL Analytical. “It is important to also test the home in case the elevated radon levels are from another source other than the granite countertops,” Garrett continued.

As one of the nation’s largest environmental laboratories, EMSL Analytical has a long history of providing radon testing services and kits. EMSL also provides geographical maps of radon concentrations at www.radontestinglab.com that are meant as an additional resource for people to check the radon levels in their areas, but as with many environmental concerns, simple testing is necessary to determine radon levels in a specific property.
