Royal DSM selects Alcatel-Lucent’s managed IP solution to transform global voice network

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has signed a four-year contract with Royal DSM N.V., based in the Netherlands, to overhaul the Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company’s global voice communications infrastructure. Alcatel-Lucent will enable DSM to create an economical, secure, high-speed IP network with a common look and feel for DSM facilities in Europe, Asia and North and South America.

DSM’s new China campus in Shanghai, which comprises all Shanghai offices of DSM (China) Ltd. Holdings and several business groups and the R&D labs of DSM in China, has already been upgraded with Alcatel-Lucent’s voice network solution. In its design and execution, the DSM China Campus will aim to achieve ‘Gold’ certification within the LEED program. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The DSM China Campus will be one of the first buildings in China to earn the ‘Gold’ certification within the LEED program.

“We looked for a global and innovative partner as we embarked on a new global IP network for our sites and employees and we found that spirit with Alcatel-Lucent,” said Feike Sijbesma and Rolf-Dieter Schwalb, CEO and CFO of DSM. “Alcatel-Lucent has the people, products and support services to help DSM succeed in today’s competitive business environment, and the energy efficient nature of their solution is very much aligned with our goals of implementing the LEED program at the new facility in Shanghai.”

The IP-based solution will reduce the cost of DSM’s interoffice phone calls, but will also result in other benefits. When communication is faster and more efficient - information reaching people when, where and how they need it - employee productivity, relationships with vendors and partners, and customer satisfaction all improves.

“DSM is an innovative company, and one where sustainability and responsibility are critical elements of their culture and actions”, said Ben Verwaayen, CEO of Alcatel-Lucent. “As an innovative global partner, Alcatel-Lucent is supporting their decision to build a state of the art infrastructure for their global voice network as they embrace what we call the Dynamic Enterprise.”

Alcatel-Lucent will fully manage the solution and services for DSM. Employees across the globe will share common interfaces and functionality, while DSM will also benefit through a pay per user model for services and the assurance of a flexible growth path for deployment of advanced applications. Managed services include a centralized helpdesk with support in key languages, potentially including Mandarin.
