Quick data warehouse deployment drives rapid ROI, growth in user network

LAS VEGAS - Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today announced that Lund Food Holdings, a privately owned chain of upscale supermarket stores in the northern United States, has expanded and enhanced their Teradata enterprise data warehouse (EDW). The move to a larger platform reflects increasing information needs and user base at food retailer Lund’s, a business that is adding new functionality and speed to its information infrastructure.

“The Teradata platform accelerates reporting from weeks to just hours, giving us daily, integrated snapshots of the business,” said Kevin Baartman, vice president, IT, Lund Food Holdings. “The Teradata platform and expansion have been competitively priced, and the system has proven its value, with ease of use for our staff, and the capability of getting the information to the people who need it. The fact that we implemented the initial system in five months resulted in a quick return on our investment, and we are really rolling on the expansion.”

The initial five-month data warehouse deployment supported operational intelligence in sales, labor, merchandise management by item, budget and other critical retail business metrics. The use of Teradata Retail Decisions software has provided a broad scope of analytic templates and metrics for multiple views of the business, with rich data visibility to better access, predict, analyze, interpret and act on daily item movement by store, customer and channel.

The new, extended and enhanced data warehouse at Lunds will drive greater insight into a number of key business processes and economic drivers, with a sharp focus on marketing and customer analysis for insights into improved customer service.

The next phase beginning immediately is focused on better understanding the buying behavior of customers (market basket analysis), as well as supporting the online customer service staff. Another key focus will be on inventory optimization, Baartman said. This involves examining how to refine the assortment of products in the store, the amount of product on the shelves and the effectiveness of various promotions.

“It is a privilege to partner with one of the premier grocery and specialty food retailers in the United States,” said Dean Wold, region director, Teradata. “Both the Lunds and the Byerly’s brands are well known for quality, freshness and innovation, and they are often imitated by other companies. Lunds excels in this highly competitive industry by providing their customers superior service and product selection. The powerful economic value of delivering extraordinary business insights to a growing number of users and analysts underscores the value of Teradata in driving retail intelligence for competitive advantage.”

The Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse platform supports the complex data management workloads required for operational and strategic intelligence in active data warehouse environments, which will bring a real-time dimension to Lunds’ data management.

At the Teradata PARTNERS User Group Conference and Expo, being held at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Lunds held a session Sunday on how the Teradata platform is used.
