HP Co-chairs Sponsorship of Texas Conference for Women; Announces Contest for Small Business Owners

WEBWIRE

In celebration of the talent, achievements and potential of the women of Texas, HP today announced its co-chair sponsorship of the Texas Conference for Women.

Themed “The Next Chapter of You,” and taking place in Houston – which is also home to a large HP campus – the conference offers an excellent opportunity for Texas women from a variety of industries and backgrounds to network, discuss pertinent issues and learn from each other. Through the sponsorship, HP honors female leaders and offers them support through various programs created specifically for the Texas Conference for Women.

“We are proud to support our employees and the great state of Texas,” said Jeri Callaway, senior vice president and general manager for business PCs, HP Personal Systems Group. “The Texas Conference for Women is about everything HP supports – inspiring people to be the best they can be, connecting with others to learn from each other, and finding success.”

Helping businesses go green

Encouraging small businesses to incorporate environmentally responsible practices, HP is supporting the new Texas Women Small Business Contest, “Boost Your Business by Going Green.” Women-owned businesses based in Texas are encouraged to submit innovative ways they’ve reduced their carbon footprint while also saving money or generating revenue.

Submissions will be accepted from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2009; a panel of judges from HP, the Texas Conference for Women and Texas Governor Rick Perry’s office will select the top entrants. The winner and two finalists, who will be announced at the Texas Conference for Women 2009, will win $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 worth of HP energy-efficient products, respectively.

“The Texas Conference for Women provides the opportunity for women to come together and invest in themselves – and to invest in the future of Texas,” said Texas first lady Anita Perry. “As a co-chair sponsor, HP offers women the tools they need to succeed. With HP’s support, women from across the state are one step closer to fulfilling their professional and personal goals.”

Inspiring tomorrow’s leaders

Recognizing the critical importance of promoting and supporting young women to become the business leaders of tomorrow, HP is sponsoring 50 high school girls from César E. Chávez High School, who will attend the conference as a part of the Young Women Programs. HP will match each team of five girls with an HP “mentor” employee and provide each team with video cameras, encouraging them to compile a documentary of the event, recording their insights and thoughts throughout the day.

Additionally, HP is supporting scholarships for seven students who will be pursuing higher education at accredited Texas institutions. As part of the scholarship package, HP will be presenting each of the aspiring collegians with an HP Pavilion dv6917nr Notebook PC, ideal for juggling the demanding needs of a college student.

Information sessions for small business owners

Janet Morris, a marketing manager with HP, will participate in a panel on how to effectively market and manage a small business, including the use of HP Total Care. Through the HP Total Care portfolio of tools, services and support, HP offers free online classes, free in-house marketing tools, and a variety of products and services that help small businesses achieve their goals and project a professional image.

HP also will host a breakout session on green living for conference attendees. Naila Seif, director of Alliances and Business Development at HP, will host the session and John Byrd, strategic business manager of the Americas Environmental Group at HP, will be a panelist. Attendees will learn how to incorporate environmentally responsible practices into their daily lives.
