National Agency DGT of Spain Taps Teradata for Real-Time Intelligence on Complex Traffic System, Highways and Events

Analytical platform and applications deliver single traffic overview to facilitate reporting and support decisions to help reduce traffic accidents and improve service to citizens

MADRID, Spain and LAS VEGAS - Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today announced that Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) of Spain, a national traffic management agency, has deployed a centralized information warehouse using the Teradata platform for enterprise intelligence to meet its fast-growing requirements for accurate, real-time information.

Using analytical and data mining software tools, users of the new data warehouse quickly access real-time insight within a central intelligence system that integrates data from different operational systems on a continuous basis. Using advanced statistical analytics, DGT obtains solid and reliable information to investigate all aspects regarding security. DGT can also analyze data and statistics required to plan, manage and coordinate facilities and technologies to control and regulate many different traffic situations and service levels.

This new data environment addresses the information needs of DGT users and also allows flexible queries from external organizations such as city councils, government bureaus and appropriate analysts within congress. New complex cross-functional queries are now answered with rapid response times. Example questions such as “accidents involving drivers of high-cylinder capacity motorcycles on certain highways” or “evolution of the number of accidents at a specific tract of the road where speed control devices are located” are answered immediately, resulting in decision making that is truly important in helping ensure citizen safety.

The project started in 2007 and has gradually evolved to incorporate multiple subject areas into the Teradata platform, including data such as vehicles, fines, drivers, licences, financials and exams. Further subject areas will be integrated into the data warehouse over the coming months.

DGT’s enterprise data warehouse is based on the high-performance and maximum scalability of a multiple terabyte, multiple-node Teradata platform and database, with native system tools and utilities to load, extract and route the flow of critical data. The integrated tools include analytic applications, a reporting scoreboard and structured query language in the context of an active web environment.
