Mira Mobile Television Selects 12 Fujinon Lenses For New 53-Foot HD Production Truck

WAYNE, New Jersey – Portland, OR - based Mira Mobile Television has acquired a complement of 12 Fujinon HD lenses for the company’s newest high-end, 53-foot HD production truck, M7HD. The new lens package for M7HD includes: one XA101x8.9BESM super telephoto field lens with image stabilization, six XA88x 8.8BESM telephoto field lens with stabilization, three HA22 x7.8BERM ENG lenses and two HA13x4.5BERM ENG super wide angle lens. The 53-foot mobile unit will travel with the 12 Fujinon lenses and 10 Sony 1550 1080p HD cameras.

M7HD, MIRA’s third HD truck constructed since 2005, rolled out late this summer. The HD lens selection was clear cut, according to MIRA Director of Engineering, Bill Duncan: “Not only has MIRA Mobile Television had a long standing relationship with Fujinon, but the technological aspects of their product, such as aspheric technology and anti-fogging features made them stand out as an ideal choice for M7HD.”

Aspheric technology (AT2), found exclusively on Fujinon lenses, is a proprietary design that improves performance over conventional designs. With AT2, a single aspheric element reduces distortion at wide angles, improves corner resolution, reduces glare and reflections, and allows chromatic aberration to be managed throughout the zoom range, rather than simply optimized at specific points. Since light passing through aspheric elements focuses at the same point on the focal plane, additional elements are not needed, making AT2-equipped lenses lighter and smaller.

“The aspheric technology appealed to us for two reasons,” explained Duncan. “Since there are fewer elements that you have to create an optical image, there’s less opportunity for flare, glare and other issues. And a lighter lens can have a significant impact when it comes to the cost of fuel. Even eliminating a couple of ounces can represent a cost savings over the long haul.”

MIRA Mobile Television operates in an area of the Pacific Northwest, which receives significant rainfall. It was crucial that MIRA select lenses with added moisture control and anti-fogging features. All Fujinon field lenses incorporate a fixed front element, which reduces dust contamination and serves as protection for the front focus group. A concealed compartment, which contains a field replaceable drying agent, serves to reduce fogging of the internal lens components due to humidity.

“There are times we have to transport the lenses when they’re still wet, after breaking down from a shoot,” said Duncan. “We’ve had to postpone shooting after rainy shows with other lenses until their interior fogging clears up. That just doesn’t happen with Fujinon lenses.”
