Carbon Cycle and Habitat Diversity Trail will be officially dedicated on October 13

The Merrimac Preserve near Devil’s Lake State Park will be the site for a special ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony on Monday morning, October 13. Riverland Conservancy will be holding the event to officially open their Carbon Cycle and Habitat Diversity Trail – one of three major trails on the property.

Barbara J. Swan, Riverland Conservancy Board Member and Wisconsin Power and Light Company President, will make brief remarks at the ceremony and will officially open the Trail. Dr. Christopher J. Kucharik, representing UW-Madison’s Center for Sustainability and Global Environment, will join her in participating in the event.

“The Carbon Cycle and Habitat Diversity Trail offers those that hike it a glimpse at many different habitats and restored areas,” said Swan. “It is just one of many environmental educational opportunities provided by Riverland Conservancy on its Merrimac Preserve property.”

The 1.8-mile Carbon Cycle and Habitat Diversity Trail is organized to be self-guided and allow users to explore everything it has to offer at their own pace. The trail includes educational signage to explain each habitat, including a class 1 trout stream, a native prairie, an oak savanna and a wetland marsh, along with opportunities to view wildlife that calls the Preserve home.

“The Merrimac Preserve offers wonderful environmental educational opportunities, like exploring our Carbon Cycle and Habitat Diversity Trail,” said Linda Lynch, Riverland Conservancy’s General Manager. “It’s important that people know more about the Riverland Conservancy and what we are working to accomplish.”

The special ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 13 at S6888 Highway 113 between Merrimac and Baraboo. Parking is available at the location and the public is invited to attend the event. For more information, please contact Linda Lynch at (608) 458-4250.
