Atos Origin takes part in TRACEBACK1, a European Union Research project to improve food supply chains traceability

Madrid, Atos Origin, a leading international IT services company, announced that it is participating in TRACEBACK an Integrated project of the European Union Sixth Framework Programme of Scientific and Technological Research, Priority 5 “Food Quality and Safety”. TRACEBACK’s main objective is to develop a well functioning generic solution for traceability and information management within food chains, including objective monitoring based in micro-devices.

28 organizations active in food research and the food industry from 11 countries have joined forces in order to create and test a new food traceability integrated system. TRACEBACK‘s consortium will develop innovative models and tools to support the implementation of an ideal traceability integrated system for the entire food chain, characterised by objectively connecting product flow and related information flow, ensuring available and reliable traceability information along the entire food chain, accommodating technologies currently adopted by all actors of the food chain without imposing any technology change.

As part of the project, Atos Origin is responsible for the development of the information infrastructure that will enable the construction of the full information flow along the food supplier chain; and the integration of the different components created within the project or existing in the food market (this means sensors, micro-devices, legacy systems and software components). The objective is to achieve a seamless solution, based on an innovative service-oriented Reference Architecture that will be applied in two different pilots (for tomato and dairy-feed products) to evaluate the performance under industrial conditions.

TRACEBACK is setting up an Industrial Platform (TIP) to reduce the gap between the industries and the scientific research and to promote innovation and research concerning traceability. In this industrial platform, ideas will be discussed, new techniques could be introduced and sensors or innovative methods for purposes defined directly by the food industry could be developed. Through this platform, TRACEBACK could communicate results from the project to the industry but also stimulate industrial implementation, innovation and feedback concerning traceability.

European funded project TRACEBACK´s consortium is also organising several workshops about the traceability in food and the different impacts on this industrial sector. These workshops address TRACEBACK and traceability related topics and offer as well the possibility for companies to become partners in the TIP.

In the past months, TRACEBACK has organized 6 country workshops in Spain, Poland, Sweden, Italy, Turkey and Egypt, to make the first contact with the European companies that are interested in increasing their competitiveness while improving the European Traceability system. Atos Origin is organizing a workshop about food traceability within TRACEBACK project (“TRACEBACK: Advances in Food Traceability, Quality and Security”) which will take place next September 30th in Madrid office (Albarracín 25).
