Mollydooker’s Boxer Shiraz Rated as Wine Spectator Editor’s Most Exciting New Wines
For many years the rule has been, if you want to show that you make serious wine, your packaging had better be serious too. Now however, artistry doesn’t have to stop in the winery.
Along with other highly-respected wineries around the world, Mollydooker’s own Sarah & Sparky Marquis, of McLaren Vale, South Australia are proving that great wine can be packaged in a way that personally connects with consumers far beyond the wine itself. “The first thing people do when they taste our wine is say ‘WOW’, the second thing they tell us is how much they love our labels. I’ve woven fun stories and little surprises into each label, so each wine tells a personal story about mine and Sparky’s life together, and our fans really relate to that. We love sharing our wines and connecting with people, and our labels really help make that happen,” says Sarah Marquis, owner and winemaker of Mollydooker Wines.

It’s tough to argue the fact that Mollydooker Carnival of Love Shiraz ($90) is one seriously great red wine – no matter how fun and unexpected the label may be! The 2005 vintage was rated 99 points by The Wine Advocate. 2006 was rated by Harvey Steiman as the “#8 Top Wine in the World” in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines of 2007, and it was awarded 97 points by Jay Miller at The Wine Advocate.
The label, developed in tandem by Sarah Marquis and an Australian design firm Mash Studio, depicts a joyous and colorful scene of revelry. So lovely is the artwork, a passerby would be hard-pressed not to go in for a closer look. And that is precisely the point. Not just for fun, a wine label can actually bolster interest on the shelf.
Look deeper and you start to engage in the entire story and history of Sarah and Sparky’s winemaking history together. Both Sarah and Sparky are Mollydookers – an Aussie term for a left hander – and if you look closely, the characters illustrated on the Carnival of Love label are the same people depicted individually on their Lefty Series labels. The Lefty wines include 2007 The Boxer Shiraz (rated as the Wine Spectator “Editor’s Most Exciting New Wines”, Two Left Feet Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot, The Maitre D’ Cabernet, The Scooter Merlot and The Violinist Verdelho. They’re all super-highly rated and only $25 per bottle.
In the case of Mollydooker’s “Love” wines, ‘Enchanted Path’ and ‘Carnival of Love’, the beauty of the labels are found in the details. Small, custom fonts and writing on both the front and back recite poetry, “Every heart is full and the joy of love permeates all things. This is as life should be. A carnival of love.” There’s lots of other fun little surprises to be found by a curious eye, like when pick up the two “Love” wines and place them side by side, the labels form one beautiful image!
Mollydooker will soon release their “All You Need is Love” gift pack, including one bottle of ‘Carnival of Love’ Shiraz (WA 95 points) and one bottle of ‘Enchanted Path’ Shiraz/Cabernet (WA 92 points), lovingly packaged in its own gorgeous box with a personalized gift card – ready to release for the holiday gift giving season. “We’re creating a special package to make it easy for anyone to help spread a little more love in the world,” says Sarah Marquis.
