Project Ahimsa Raises $10,000 for South Asia Earthquake Relief and Youth Empowerment at San Francisco Benefit December 9, 2005

WEBWIRE

(San Francisco) – Project Ahimsa, a nationally recognized charity dedicated to the empowerment of youth through music, raised $10,000 at Shake for the Quake, a San Francisco benefit on December 9. Proceeds from the event will support earthquake relief efforts in South Asia as well as Project Ahimsa’s global youth music education initiatives.

Project Ahimsa will donate half of the evening’s proceeds to Developments in Literacy (DIL) to help those affected by the massive October earthquake in South Asia, which left over 87,000 people dead, 3 million homeless, and more than 50,000 children orphaned. DIL, a non-profit organization that promotes literacy for children in remote and neglected areas of Pakistan, will use the funds to continue setting up schools in earthquake-torn areas.

At the event, the 500+ crowd enjoyed bands, dancers and DJs representing traditions from around the world. UK-based DJ/artist and BBC 1 radio host Bobby Friction and San Francisco’s Cheb i Sabbah were the featured DJs, keeping the crowd on its feet until late into the night. The dynamic Chicago-based ensemble Funkadesi performed its blend of East Indian music, reggae, funk, and Afro-Caribbean grooves.

Additional performers included BlackMahal (featuring Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti), Feroshus Sizzle, Dholrhythms Dance Troupe and Ferhan Qureshi and Wallace Harvey. In the DJ Lounge, Nihal, Amar, Nader and Ranj spun dance grooves all night long.

Project Ahimsa’s sponsors helped make the event possible. Gold event sponsors: ipsh! and VSC Consulting. Silver event sponsors: Masttones/MetroPCS and SwipeUSA. Bronze event sponsors: the Chattha Family, the Eichbaum Family, FloraGarden Inc., Flavor Group LLC, Ian Berke Real Estate, Propane Studio and Rai & Associates.

In less than four years, Project Ahimsa has empowered 10,000 children worldwide through music education, instrument donation and cross-cultural activities, such as the third annual “Tablas & Turntables: Re-imagining Sound” workshop at Colorado’s Eagle Rock School, an innovative high school for at-risk youth; and summer music programs for underprivileged children at the Renaissance Center in Tampa, Florida.
