Words of Choice Announces Tour to Stop Anti-Choice Ballot Measure in Colorado

Words of Choice announces plans to tour Colorado for ten days in October 2008 to amplify ’No on 48’ conversations about a state ballot measure that could result in the ban of abortion, contraception and stem cell research.

Words of Choice is currently scheduled to perform several dates at university and community centers in Denver, Pueblo and Boulder.

Playwright Cindy Cooper’s “Words of Choice” pieces together excerpts from a dozen real stories. ’’I wanted to create a work that could show the huge panorama of reproductive rights, not just abortion,’’ said Cooper. ’’I wanted it to reflect the full complexity of these issues in women’s lives.’’

An ensemble of three New York actors, under the direction of Francesca Mantani Arkus, will perform the hour-long “Words of Choice.” All performances are followed by a discussion with a special focus on the state ballot measure.

Colorado State Coordinator Rachel Becker is working along with the New York team of Words of Choice to create partnerships and build alliances throughout the state to support the performance and its goals.

The show will feature New York actors Claudia Campbell, Crista Marie Jackson and Carl H. Jaynes. Writings in the play include ones by Justice Harry Blackmun and Sally Blackmun, Angela Bonavoglia, Kathleen Tolan, Alix Olson, June Jordan, Susan Wicklund, Michael David Quinn, Esosa Edosomwan, Barbara Lindsay, Penny Lane, Judith Arcana and others.

“Words of Choice” has previously traveled to 20 states in support of reproductive freedom. A 2006 tour in South Dakota presented performances to help activists draw attention to the dangers of a state ballot measure that would ban abortion. The measure was defeated.

The tour will start with a special performance in Hays, Kansas at Fort Hays State University as a Benefit for 1100 Torches Campaign, in remembrance of Jana Mackey, on October 10.
