Saigon Commercial Bank Partners With IBM to Establish a Scalable Green Data Center

ARMONK, NY .-IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) today announced a successfully collaborative effort to implement the IBM Scalable Modular Data Center (SMDC) -- in order to meet the company’s technology requirements of its expanding business, while simultaneously saving cost and energy by installing a “green data center.”

The SMDC solution integrates power, cooling, rack, management, services and security, allowing for selection of standardized components to create a solution through modular configurations. By using standardized components, the architecture of SCB easily scales to meet the evolving needs of the company. In addition to the data center installation, other services include project management, recovery plan and network assessment.

As one of the leading joint-stock commercial banks in Vietnam, SCB teamed with IBM to deploy the data center consolidation with the explicit goals of reducing energy consumption as well as reducing cost, space and IT maintenance, while enhancing the efficiency and capacity of its data center facilities.

Through this agreement, IBM will partner with SCB to transform its current existing data center to a Scalable Modular Data Center, creating a cost-effective and high quality 50-100 square meters data center. The new SMDC solution will enable SCB to lower their data center design costs by approximately 15% compared to that of the old raised-floor data center solution. Furthermore, adopting SMDC will allow SCB to bring down implementation costs by 20% and operating costs as much as by 40%. As the SMDC does not require a raised floor, SCB will reduce close to 40% of space needed to be used. In short, the SMDC implemented by IBM will allow SCB to save space, bring down energy costs as well as establish a scalable data center that is designed to help them meet their present computing needs, with the ability to scale to meet their future business needs.

IBM aims to implement the entire SMDC solution in a record time of eight to twenty four weeks compared to the industry norm which is about 18-24 months. “IBM’s long history and expertise with data center implementations enabled us to create a solution to save energy and ensure efficient server performance for SCB,” said Vo Tan Long, Deputy General Manager, IBM Vietnam. “Green data centers are all about efficiency -- equipment and cooling efficiency, space utilization efficiency and manpower efficiency.”

He further added, “The modular data centers implemented by IBM based on an ’expand as you go’ model which radically reduces upfront capital expenditures. This means that the data center infrastructure will expand and adapt to actual IT requirements, rather than projected requirements.”
