Russell Reid in New Jersey Completes Under Water Jetting Contract

The Multi-Species Aquaculture Facility in Cape May, NJ was left in rotten situation when their massive pipes which extend from tanks at its facility on shore into the water became clogged with aquatic life. This establishment located in Cape May is dedicated to the research of marine life on the New Jersey shore. Under the direction of marine biologists at Rutgers University, the facility is designed to study and promote the cultivation of finfish and shellfish industries in the state.

The facility has two large ponds with 26” inlet pipes extending from tanks at its facility on shore into the water. Over time, the pipes had become clogged with mussels, algae, barnacles, and other underwater growth. And just like the piping in a house, they had to be cleaned out. This, however, was not a simple matter of running a ‘snake’ and clearing out a simple clog. In this case, the inner piping had become encrusted and clogged along its entire length with aquatic life that clung on stubbornly. The mussels showed some real muscle.

A professional diver was hired to insert the jets into the submerged pipes where they discharged into the ponds, and compressors were set to provide just enough high pressure air to clear the piping of the marine. The piping was cleaned a distance of 120 feet and helped the facility continue on with its mission.
