Argonne hosts 1st Int’l Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications Sept. 15-17
ARGONNE, Ill. (Aug. 2008) — The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory will host the 1st International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications Sept. 15-17, 2008.
Lithium batteries are the most promising energy storage device for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Their use in HEVs and PHEVs would effectively reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in vehicles. However, there are key technological challenges that hinder the wide-spread commercial use of lithium batteries.
The 1st International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications will bring together in one place an international corps of federal research agencies from the United States, China, Japan, Europe and Korea and leading auto and battery makers, scientists and engineers that are actively involved in the development of safe, economical and long-lasting lithium batteries.
The mission of the conference is to enhance the global research and development effort to develop lithium batteries for transportation, to accelerate the discussion of research and development problems, progress and achievement, and to strengthen global collaboration.
Argonne was designated by DOE as the nation’s lead laboratory for the simulation, validation and evaluation of PHEVs and advanced technologies required for these vehicles. Argonne plays a major role in DOE’s energy storage program within its Office of Vehicle Technologies. The research laboratory’s R&D focus in the battery arena is on advanced lithium battery technologies that will meet the energy storage needs of the light-duty vehicles market.
