Popular Nogales-Sonora Restaurant “Elvira’s” to Open Soon in Tubac

August 28, 2008 (Tubac, Ariz.) – Locals can practically taste it already: Elvira’s signature Tequila Shrimp dish, simmered in Herradura Tequila, bell peppers, spices and a secret sauce. It’s just one of the mouth-watering items expected to be on the menu when the ever-popular Nogales, Sonora restaurant opens its north-of-the border location in La Entrada de Tubac in early December.

Elvira’s is one of three new restaurants slated to open in La Entrada de Tubac, Tubac’s newly refurbished and expanded gateway collection of retail, galleries, offices and restaurants. The center fronts the East Frontage Road, between Bridge Road and Tubac Road at the main entrance to the Village of Tubac.

“Elvira’s got the green light to go ahead with their tenant build out plan last Friday,” announced Michael Horowitz of Oxford Capital Partners, developer for La Entrada de Tubac. “All necessary approvals have been granted, including a liquor license, and tenant improvements began this week,” he said.

Elvira’s has been a favorite Nogales-Sonora dining destination since it opened across the line in 1927, according to Ruben Monroy, whose family still owns and operates the restaurant. Monroy claims that no other restaurant in Nogales has received as many culinary awards from food critics in Mexico. Soon, Southern Arizonans with a hankering for Guero Chilies, Chicken in Pipian and Mole Almendrado will be able to satiate their cravings at Elvira’s in Tubac, 20 minutes north of the Mexican border.

Two other new restaurants slated to open soon at La Entrada de Tubac are Los Agaves, featuring Sonoran-style Mexican food, and The Snack Shop Gallery, featuring gourmet French fries, hot dogs and Italian Gelato ice cream. The new restaurants will join the already well-established Tubac Deli and Coffee shop to round out the center’s dining options.

According to leasing agent Todd Harrison of The Harrison Group, retail shops and galleries either now open or opening soon in La Entrada de Tubac include Tumacookery, The Yard Woman, Carol Curry Gallery, Feminine Mystique Art Gallery, Damian L. Koorey Designs, Michelle’s Gallery (formerly known as Misco Market), La Cucaracha de Tubac, Renee Taylor Gallery, Manos Gallery, Bruce Baughman Studio and Gallery, La Esplendida, Cowboy’s Sweetheart, Fresh Produce Resort Wear, Casa Fina de Tubac, One World One Chance, KB Rock’n, Cactus Huggers Gallery, and Paradise (formerly known as Purrfect Bow-wow Boutique). Office tenants include Kniff Dental, First United Realty, LandAmerica Financial Group, Southern Arizona Title, Terra Flora Landscape Design, Commerce Bank, and the Harrison Group.

La Entrada de Tubac houses the Tubac/Santa Cruz Visitor Center, public restrooms, and more parking than all of Tubac’s current parking combined, plus beautifully landscaped walkways, which beckon pedestrian shoppers to come, and stay a while.

La Entrada de Tubac is, by all accounts, a stunning entry statement for the Village of Tubac. Developers have spared no expense in staying true to the Old World, indigenous architectural traditions, including real clay mud adobe structure, all-wood entry doors, custom iron work, and hand-wrought light fixtures.

“The architectural vocabulary we’ve employed at La Entrada de Tubac has made it very special,” Horowitz said. Although the created environment is new, it is totally authentic, enhancing the pedestrian/Mercado atmosphere that has long defined the Village of Tubac.

With its 55,000 square feet-plus collection of shops, galleries, restaurants and offices, La Entrada de Tubac is a unique gathering place that is sure to have a sizeable economic impact on this historic artist colony. A full calendar of concerts and special events is planned to help draw visitors to the center once the season is in full swing.
