GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook and all-new Chevy Traverse garner high marks from automotive and safety experts

General Motors’ lineup of award-winning crossovers today adds the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick 2008 to the growing list of accolades.

The significant safety award results from the GMC Acadia meeting the Institute’s highest rating for performance in its demanding front, side and rear impacts in addition to providing standard Stabilitrak, GM’s electronic stability control system. The IIHS test results also apply to the GMC Acadia’s sister vehicles: the Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook, and soon to be released Chevy Traverse.

“The Acadia aced our front, side, and rear crash tests,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. “While affording buyers state-of-the-art crash protection, the Acadia also includes standard electronic stability control, which safety research shows can help keep drivers out of some crashes altogether.”

Since the introduction of the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook in 2007, and the Buick Enclave in 2008, the popular crossovers have taken the marketplace by storm. Along with the all-new Chevy Traverse, GM’s crossovers provide the capability of an SUV and smooth ride and handling of a crossover, along with GM’s continuous safety system that helps protect passengers before, during and after a crash.

“We’re pleased to have the IIHS join other automotive and safety authorities in recognition of our crossover vehicles,” said Beth Lowery, vice president, Environment, Energy and Safety Policy for General Motors. “Along with the IIHS Top Safety Pick, the 2009 GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, Saturn Outlook and Chevy Traverse have all received the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program’s (NCAP) highest rating of 5-stars for both the driver and front passenger in the frontal crash test, and for the driver and rear passenger in the side test.”
